What is a domain, sub-domain and alias domain

On the Internet, your domain name is your unique identity. Having your own domain name, website and email addresses will give you and your business a more professional look.

The only way for a website to be visible on the internet is if it’s hosted by a web hosting service provider, also known as a web host. Domain names are formed by the rules and procedures of the Domain Name System (DNS). Domain names are used in various networking contexts and for application-specific naming and addressing purposes.

Thanks to DNS, though, you don’t have to keep your own address book of IP address. To find a website, you type the domain name (or URL) into your browser. Your computer will then connect to the website’s server, and the web page is delivered onto your screen., Domain Names, Domains, Hosting

The top-level domains (TLDs) such as com, net, and org are the highest level of Internet domain names.

  • .com are usually used for commercial purposes, such as for an online store or a business site, although they’re increasingly being used by default as they imply a certain amount of trust.
  • .net were originally used by networking companies (such as internet service providers) but are now also multipurpose.
  • .org were originally used by different organizations

As of now, there are over 800 extensions so you will have no trouble finding available domain names that announce to the world what you do, who you are, or where you are.

Domain names are also organized in subordinate levels (subdomains) of the DNS root domain, which is nameless. Individual pages or subdomains can be built off the root domain, but each page URL must technically include the same root domain to be a part of your website i.e. subdomains are an extension of your primary domain name and are used for site organization or redesign purposes, or even to host your blog or eCommerce store.

Therefore, might be an FTP server, would be a World Wide Web server, and could be an email server, each intended to perform only the implied function. You can create additional subdomains for your domain like or Each subdomain basically can function as a separate “business” within the overall corporation.

Depending on your web host, the subdomain page can be located in a sub-folder of your main domain or a separate folder.

Alias domain

An alias domain is NOT a unique website. Instead, it is a masked forward to the primary domain name, much like a website alias. Alias domains are commonly used when:

  • You need a place to park a domain for which you do not have a website
  • Ifhave more than one domain that should lead to your primary domain
  • You have common misspellings of your domain name that you have registered

Another reason for a business to register an alias domain name is to protect copyrights and trademarks, build creditability, increase brand awareness, and search engine positioning. Critics often claim abuse of administrative power over domain names. For example, some can buy,,,,, etc., and make all of them redirect to
